Redemptrix

Oil on canvas, 24 × 18 in, 2025

In Catholic theology, Redemptrix is a title describing the Virgin Mary’s unique maternal participation in Christ’s salvation of humanity through her obedience and suffering in union with Jesus. This painting recontextualizes my own baptism, drawing from a family photograph to subvert idyllic representations of domesticity . The composition emphasizes dysfunction, the breakdown of prescribed roles and the gendered tension between hierarchy, autonomy, and ritual.
